HEALTH AND NURSING
Purpose
The YPA School Nurse Program serves to promote health and safety, facilitate positive student development, and to intervene with actual or potential health issues that could pose as a barrier to the education process. We are here to serve students with chronic conditions, as well as emergent needs and minor injuries that happen during the school day. Contact your school nurse if we can help in any way.
Note From the Nurses:
With weather warming up and daylight extending we should all follow the sun’s example and get out into the open. Hippocrates, remembered as the father of medicine, once said, “walking is man’s best medicine.” Not only is it one of the simplest and most accessible forms of exercise and it has SO many benefits!
Brain
Walking increases blood flow to the brain, improving energy levels.
It decreases stress hormones and releases endorphins which improves mood and reduces risk of anxiety and depression.
Fresh air and sunlight stimulate the brain to produce serotonin, which can help regulate sleep and appetite.
Heart
Walking increases your heart rate which improves blood flow and helps your heart pump blood more efficiently, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Blood
Walking can help reduce insulin resistance, keeping blood sugar levels balanced.
It can also regulate blood pressure and cholesterol.
Digestion
Walking can help food move through your digestive system, reducing bloating and digestive problems.
Bones/Joints/Muscles
Walking increases bone density, strengthening bones and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
Movement increases the circulation of synovial fluid around the joints, providing essential lubrication and nutrients to the cartilage. This can help ease arthritis pain and stiffness.
Vitamin D is essential for healthy bone and muscle development and maintenance.
Here are some tips for taking STEPS in the right direction.
Start slow
Set goals
Gradually increase your distance and pace
Walk with friends or family
Stay hydrated
Listen to your body

Contagious and Communicable Disease Tracking
York Preparatory Academy is required to track contagious and communicable diseases including but not limited to: Flu, Covid-19, respiratory, gastrointestinal, skin, and other disease categories listed on the SC Exclusion List. If your student has received a diagnosis from a physician, please use the following FORM LINK to help us identify, report, control, and prevent the spread of infectious disease.
Staying Healthy
Here is a reminder of the best health practices to decrease the spread and transmission of viruses here at school and throughout the community.
Please remember to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw used tissues in the trash. If you don't have a tissue, cough, or sneeze into your elbow, not your hands.
Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, dry hands with a paper towel, and use the paper towel to turn off the faucet. If soap and water are not available, hand sanitizers may also be used to perform hand hygiene.
Remember to stay home when you are sick and follow the recommendations listed on the SC Exclusion List.
